Flat Racing’s most famous race pits the best middle distance three-year olds up against each other over the turns and undulations of Epsom in June. Every year the finest crop of three year olds turn up looking for one of the most prestigious prizes in racing. The race is run over 12 furlongs (one and a half miles) and some of the horses who have won the Derby in the past include Nijinsky, Mill Reef and High Chaparral. The Derby is the third Classic of the flat season.
Royal Ascot not only provides one of the highlights of the flat racing season but also the social calendar. This five day festival of racing in Berkshire is attended by the Royal Family on each of the five days and features five Group 1 races. Highlights of the festival include the Ascot Gold Cup, St James Palace Stakes and the Prince Of Wales Stakes. Royal Ascot takes place in June each year.
Probably the highlight of horse racing’s summer, the King George VI and QE Diamond Stakes takes place at Ascot over 12 furlongs in late-July. This prestigious Group 1 race offers the first chance for exciting three year olds to take on their elders in a Group 1 race. This clash of the generations always provides a great spectacle at Ascot as seen in previous years where the victors have included Brigadier Gerard, Shergar and Dancing Brave.
Named after the epic landmark in Paris, the Arc de Triomphe race matches the uniqueness of that monument. Played out in Longchamp racecourse in Paris every October over 12 furlongs the Arc is the middle distance championship race for all aged flat race horses. This great race takes place at the end of the season and usually features the winner of the Derby and King George in it’s line up giving it a real championship feel. Great winners in the past include Alleged, Dancing Brave and Sakhee.
