Gold Cup

The showpiece race of the Cheltenham Festival, the Gold Cup always takes place on the final day of the prestigious festival in March and is a championship race for three mile chasers. The race offers a true test of stamina and grit and is usually always won by top-class horses. Previous winners include Arkle, L’Escargot and Best Mate.

Champion Hurdle

If the Gold Cup is the champion race for chasers, the Champion Hurdle provides the ultimate test for hurdlers. The race is ran over two miles at Cheltenham usually at a frenetic pace and always on the opening day of the Festival. Istabraq, Night Nurse and Sea Pigeon are some of the superstars who have graced the roll of honour.

Champion Chase

The Champion Chase is often described by horse racing purists as the ultimate race as it features two mile chasers at full tilt clambering over Cheltenham’s big fences. There is usually always a big name faller in the field and it’s rare for this race to be predictable. For many people this is the highlight of the Cheltenham Festival.

Grand National

Almost certainly the most famous race in the world, the Grand National provides the ultimate stamina test of four and a half miles over Aintree’s tough course every April. It’s become something of a national obsession to have a bet on the Grand National because of the uniqueness of the race and the characters that come out of it. Who will ever forget Red Rum’s three wins back in the 1970’s?
