All players in a poker tournament pay the same buy-in (like an entry fee) and begin with an equal chip stack as each player vies for the others' chips in an attempt to eliminate the competition. The overall tournament winner is the player that wins all the chips!

Each tournament has a buy-in such as $10+$1. This means that the tournament will cost you $11 to enter. $10 of this goes towards to prize pool with $1 paid to the house in rake or commission for managing the games and handling the cash function. ParadisePoker offer free tournaments every day where you can win money for nothing!

There are less choices involved in selecting a tournament than there are for cash games. The two factors you have to consider are your budget and how much time you have to play. Managing your budget playing tournaments is a lot more straightforward than it is with cash games - all you are playing with is the cost of the tournament buy-in.

There are two types of tournaments - Single Table Tournaments (Otherwise known as STT's) and Multi Table Tournaments (MTT's)

Multi Table Tournaments (MTT's)

In Multi Table Tourneys there can sometimes be thousands of players taking part which means the tournaments can run for several hours. Each tournament will have a scheduled start time listed in the lobby and you can register for the tournament up to 2 hours before the stated time. Registration closes 6 minutes before the tournament starts so don't leave it too late. The more players in a tournament, the longer it will take to complete. It's wise to ensure you have enough time to play to the finish. A tournament with 1000 players will take over 4 hours but the rewards could be huge - hundreds of times your buy-in.

Clicking 'Register' registers you for the tournament and the buy-in will be deducted from your account balance. Once the tournament starts the table window will automatically open provided you are logged in to ParadisePoker.

ParadisePoker offer MTT's in No Limit Texas Hold'em, the most popular type of tournament poker and the same as the game seen on tv tournaments and played in the main event of the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas each year.

Single Table Tournaments (STT's or Sit n Gos)

A single table tourney is exactly as the name suggests - a tournament consisting of only one table. This means there will be a maximum of 2, 5 or 10 players depending on the table size. As there are fewer players, it is easier to manage your time. A 10 player STT typically takes about one hour.

STT's do not have a set start time, they begin when the required number of players have registered which usually means only waiting a couple of minutes for all the players to join. If you watch the STT list in the lobby, you will see new tables opening all the time.

After choosing your stake you need to select a limit. Beginners might like to try link poker where there is a maximum to how much you can bet, reducing the risk of you losing all your chips on one hand. Each game will have a game type which will be Limit, NL (No Limit) and PL (Pot Limit). You can also filter the tables to only show you tables of one type by clicking the 'TYPE' at the top of the screen.
